(20 Aug 2018) Getting fit and healthy isn't just for humans.
Darwin, a male bull terrier, is being fitted with a special fitness tracker that's been designed especially for dogs.
His owner, Robert Hasek, wanted to get into better shape and needed a running partner and decided that Darwin would be the perfect candidate.
But the regular five kilometer (3.1 miles) runs were making Darwin sick with fatigue.
He wondered why the dog he thought was so active, was so out of shape.
To find out, he strapped a regular human fitness tracker to Darwin and discovered that his dog had a very interesting routine.
"I started to find (look) for some way to measure his activity. Then I saw that he is active only when I am at home and only if I am with him. But then (otherwise), he is lying, sleeping and doing nothing," says Hasek.
He knew he would have to get Darwin up and running more often but would also have to know how he was eating.
Hasek's 20 year experience as an entrepreneur meant he smelt a business opportunity and began developing a dog activity tracker.
According to the American Pet Products Association, 72.1 billion US dollars is expected to be spent in 2018 on pet products and care. That's an increase of 3.6 percent over 2017 in an industry experiencing yearly spending growth since the mid 90's.
Worldwide spending on pets in 2017, according to Euromonitor International, was $109 billion dollars.  
To develop his tracker, he sought private investors and moved to San Francisco in 2016 for three months to learn more about the tech industury.
He set up Actijoy with his partner Jana Rosenfelderova, who is now the company's chief operating officer.
Two years later, production has begun for Actijoy and the company hopes to go to market in the next two months and sell its system for US$300.
Hasek and Rosenfelderova say Actijoy tracks how rigorous activity is from "walking" to "running" to "very active."
The tracker is also linked to a wifi equipped bowl which tracks food and water consumption and timing.
Actijoy recently pre-launched at Superzoo, a pet products trade show, in Las Vegas.
Pet products expert Harrison Forbes says there is a growing market for smart pet tech.
Nipping at Actijoy's heels, just across the showroom floor, is a competitor also hoping to launch this fall. US based, Wagz, is marketing a live video capable activity tracker at a higher price.
Joshua Jasper, company spokesperson for Wagz, describes the company's Explore Smart Collar ($495 retail price) as "..the first LTE connected dog collar in the world. It has HD video streaming, and it also does activity tracking. It's the most advanced activity tracking around because it tracks calories burned and calories consumed, and it can help you make sure you're feeding your pet exactly the right amount of food each and every day."
The Wagz product has Actijoy's features but also adds; a video camera for recording and live streaming, real time GPS location and invisible fencing capability. Actijoy's tracker doesn't have GPS location or a camera.
However the Wagz product doesn't include its 'Serve Smart Feeder' that syncs with the app and collar for another $345.
