Exploring Pluto | New Horizons Spacecraft | Clyde Tombaugh | Kuiper Belt Objects

Описание к видео Exploring Pluto | New Horizons Spacecraft | Clyde Tombaugh | Kuiper Belt Objects

Exploring dwarf planet Pluto was contemplated since its discovery by Clyde Tombaugh in 1930, but Pluto presents significant challenges for exploration because of its small mass and great distance from Earth. The two probes of the Voyager program, launched in 1977 to explore Jupiter and Saturn, had also the ability for an extended mission to other targets, however, Pluto was rejected in favor of Titan, Uranus and Neptune. The first mission to Pluto was performed by an interplanetary space probe named New Horizons, launched on January 19th, 2006. Some of the ashes of Clyde Tombaugh, who died in 1997, were placed aboard the spacecraft. New Horizons reached Pluto on July 14th, 2015, after a 3,462-day journey across the Solar System. The probe took many sensational photographs during its flyby study of the dwarf planet and its moons, then went on to study other Kuiper belt objects.
