The Palace Guard was known as mostly a garage rock band formed in Los Angeles, but did have some songs that bordered on the classic mid 1960's California sound, borrowing roots from both the Beach Boys of the early 1960's and the California style sunshine pop of the mid and later 1960's such as the Turtles and the Grass Roots. "Summertime Game" is the perfect example.
The Palace Guard's first lineup consisted of Emmitt Rhodes(drums,later of the Merry Go Round fame), Rick Moser (bass guitar), Mike Conley (rhythm guitar), Chuck McClung (piano), and brothers David (tambourine, vocals), John (tambourine, vocals), and Don Beaudoin (lead guitar) For a brief period, the band also featured actor Don Grady—contributing vocals, keyboards, and drums—of My Three Sons fame, who went on to become a member of the sunshine pop band the Yellow Balloon.
They often played at the Hullabaloo on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles during their time.
