These days, choosing to go to the theatre can feel almost stubborn. It asks for sustained attention in a culture engineered to interrupt us every few seconds. In a recent New York Times newsletter, Lauren Jackson describes hope not as optimism or wishful thinking, but as the decision to stay engaged even after trust has been worn thin.

That kind of hope is built into live theatre.

When you come to a show, you sit in a room with people who are not exactly like you, watch something unfold in real time, and then leave with a few hours’ worth of shared reference. You have something to talk about that is not the news cycle, not the algorithm, not the same conversation you had yesterday.

If you are still finding your people, still figuring out what holds your attention or where community might live: bring your friends to the theatre this year. You may recognize yourselves in the work, or in the room, or in the conversation after. Even when you do not, you will have experienced something together, and connected over the shared experience.

If theatre has been part of your life for a long time, bring those who are newer to it. Support the spaces that are actively making room for fresh audiences and working artists, because culture only stays alive when it’s paid forward.

And to the artists among us, onstage and behind it: we’re grateful for you. Keep going. Keep helping one another. Keep making work that is dangerous, generous, and unafraid to name what is in the air when no one else does.
