The Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD) is a hands-on exam provided by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation. (CNCF). In this video, Trevor Sullivan provides a broad overview of who should take the exam and its contents.

All CKAD questions are scenario-driven, so it is important to have hands-on experience using the Kubectl CLI to create services, pods, and more. Knowledge of YAML and VIM is a must.

The emphasis on CKAD is deploying and designing pods. Exposing pods via services and creating deployment controllers is also covered. It is important to know how to obtain logs from pods for troubleshooting and how to shell into them.

The CKAD focuses less on cluster deployment, monitoring, and securing, as opposed to the CKA.

When studying for the CKAD, create clusters in as many different Kubernetes distributions as possible. For example, Amazon EKS can be the best solution for you; other times Digital Ocean may be your best bet. Even Google Cloud has its own Kubernetes distribution. If cloud-provided distributions are too costly, try running K3S, Docker for Desktop, or Kubernetes in Docker on your machine locally.
