Greetings, historians, and welcome to the 9th episode of Season Two of the Historians Lounge. Today, a first-timer on the show discusses a vital topic in the modern world. Cam Telch is pursuing his PhD in Educational Studies at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax. His research focuses on the underrepresentation of First World War shell shock in Canadian military museums within the framework of complex knowledge. He has acquired three degrees from York University in both History and Education. He has been studying the Canadian and British experiences of shell shock for the last five years, writing, speaking, and publishing on the topic. His research has uncovered that the stories of Canadian shell-shocked soldiers have been historically silenced due to the stigma surrounding mental health. His research seeks to bring their voices to the forefront in history education. This episode discusses the history of shell shock within the Canadian military during the Great War. We discuss schools of thought, early forms of therapy for shell shock soldiers, the British narrative, the earliest documentation of shell shock, and more. This episode touches on many deep topics and points, but as a fellow historian, I feel that this needs to be discussed and shared with others.
