Yet within that nightmare, courage survived. Dr. Ludwik Fleck and Eugen Kogon, prisoners forced to work inside the laboratory, secretly sabotaged Ding-Schuler’s experiments — replacing lethal serums with harmless ones and saving hundreds of lives under the eyes of the SS.

When the Allies liberated Buchenwald in 1945, they uncovered Ding-Schuler’s own diary — every page documenting death in the name of research. Those pages became evidence at the Nuremberg Doctors’ Trial, helping to create a new global law: The Nuremberg Code, the foundation of modern medical ethics.
