By A Staff Reporter: After a gap of nearly 15 years, the Chinese Consulate General in Kolkata has returned to the Kolkata International Book Fair with its own stall, inaugurated at the 49th edition of the prestigious literary event. The return marks a significant moment in cultural engagement between India and China, highlighting renewed efforts to strengthen people-to-people connections through literature, history and shared heritage.
In an exclusive interview with ANM News, Xu Wei, Consul General of the Chinese Consulate General in Kolkata, said he and his colleagues were delighted to be part of the grand event. Describing the book fair as a vibrant platform, Xu Wei said the Kolkata International Book Fair serves as an important window for people of different countries to learn from each other and showcase their culture, particularly Chinese culture, to Indian readers.

The Chinese pavilion features a thoughtfully curated selection of books focusing on historical and cultural links between the two nations. Special emphasis has been placed on works related to Rabindranath Tagore and his connection with China, as well as books documenting the contribution of Dr Dwarkanath Kotnis and his medical team in China. Xu Wei said these two figures are deeply respected in China and remain enduring symbols of China–India friendship. “Their contributions are never forgotten and stand as a testimony to our shared history,” he noted.

In addition to these, the stall offers books on Buddhism, Chinese cuisine, culture and diplomacy, aimed at providing visitors with a wide variety of choices and a deeper understanding of China. Xu Wei expressed hope that visitors would develop greater interest in China through this cultural exposure.

On connectivity, the Consul General welcomed the resumption of direct international flights, calling them a major boost for business communities, particularly in West Bengal. He said such flights save time and energy for businessmen travelling to China, including those attending trade events like the Canton Fair. Xu Wei expressed optimism about the early resumption of the Kolkata–Kunming direct flight and advocated for new routes to cities such as Chengdu and Qingdao.

Looking ahead, he said that with improving bilateral relations, both countries are exploring more people-to-people and cultural events, including food festivals and artistic performances, with support from local governments and the media.
