伊勢参りや参勤交代の賑わいを今に伝える東海道の宿場町
The town is a post town on the Tokaido Highway that still retains the bustling atmosphere of the Ise pilgrimage and the daimyo's shift of visiting the Ise Shrine.

鈴鹿山脈の東麓にある関宿は、古代三関のひとつ「伊勢鈴鹿関」が置かれた地であり、江戸時代には、東海道五十三次の47番目の宿場町として栄えた町です。
Seki-juku, located at the eastern foot of the Suzuka Mountains, was the site of the Ise- Suzuka-Seki, one of the three ancient seals, and prospered during the Edo period as the 47th post station town of the 53rd leg of the Tokaido Highway.

東の追分で伊勢別街道が、西の追分で大和街道がそれぞれ東海道から分岐していたため、伊勢参りや参勤交代などの交通の要衝となっていました。東海道のほとんどの宿場町が都市化などで旧態をとどめない中、関宿には東西の追分間約1.8キロメートルに江戸～明治時代に建てられた200軒もの町屋が残され、東海道の宿場町としては唯一国の重要伝統的建造物群保存地区に選定されています。
The Ise Kaido and the Yamato Kaido branched off the Tokaido Highway at the eastern and western ends of the road, respectively, making Seki-juku a strategic point of transportation for people visiting Ise and for those in attendance at the Ise Shrine. While most of the towns along the Tokaido Highway have lost their original appearance due to urbanization and other factors, Seki-juku is the only one of the towns along the Tokaido Highway selected as a national preservation area for important traditional buildings, with as many as 200 townhouses built during the Edo and Meiji periods remaining in the 1.8 km stretch between the east and west halves of the road.

東の追分の大鳥居は伊勢神宮の一の鳥居で、20年に一度の神宮式年遷宮の折、内宮宇治橋南詰の鳥居が移築されます。伊勢参りの人々はこの鳥居をくぐって伊勢神宮へ向かい、東海道を急ぎ往来する人々はここから神宮を遥拝しました。旅人の目を楽しませる町屋の漆喰彫刻などの細部意匠をはじめ、町のあちこちにもてなしの心が今も息づいています。
The Otorii (Grand Gate) at the east side of the Oiwake is the first torii of Ise Jingu Shrine, and the torii at the south end of Ujibashi Bridge at the Inner Shrine is relocated every 20 years during the Jingu Shikinen Sengu. People who visited Ise passed through this torii on their way to Ise Jingu Shrine, and those who hurriedly traveled on the Tokaido Highway worshipped at the shrine from here. The spirit of hospitality is still alive here and there in the town, including the plaster carvings and other details of the town houses that delight the eyes of travelers.

そこには、東西の文化を結ぶ町、神の国の玄関口としての誇りが感じられます。
There one can feel the pride of the town as the gateway to God's country, a town that connects the cultures of the East and the West.
