I mostly made this compilation as a place I can put my current thoughts on GMs overall, and difficulty in the game as a whole. Very long post below.
-25 and -40 GM Nightfalls aren't very different at this point. Both the damage dealt and damage received differences are barely noticeable. Which is not really what I was personally hoping for when I saw the ability to go in so low. In the past with prestige Nightfalls, -40 handicap made them near impossible in a lot of cases, and is in stark contrast to how it is now on what's meant to be some of the hardest content the game has to offer.
I'm in two minds when it comes to the current level of difficulty provided, particularly in GM Nightfalls. Both what I've come to accept in the game, and is probably right for the majority, versus what I personally want for the game.
Right now, for the majority of the playerbase, GM Nightfalls are probably in a very good place. They're approachable enough to be doable by even some of the least invested players, and very achievable by the majority of the player-base who are seeking to get them done. They'll still remain as a challenge, but not as an insurmountable summit that most will never be able to reach.
For myself, and most other players seeking truly challenging and punishing content; unfortunately, Destiny 2 will never be that game. That's something that I think most challenge players come to realise. While it would be a great way to keep the most dedicated players invested, the fact is, the majority of the playerbase don't want some insurmountable challenge.
GMs were originally released with idea that they'd challenge even the most dedicated fireteams, but season after season we've seen them become easier and easier, and changes to make them more accessible to everyone. Now, they're just the equivalent of another triumph to check off each season, without any satisfaction from being challenged for the more dedicated players.
The biggest example of this is comparing the original Solo GMs to the Solo GMs from recent seasons. The initial challenge was simply "can this even be done solo?", but now they've all devolved into "how fast can these be done solo?". This can be argued as the natural progression for any game with experience and time, but I think purely from my personal standpoint, it's been made too easy now. Being able to survive as much as we can, while also clearing entire groups of enemies without much effort, in -40 content solo, it shows how strong we are.
Whether that's the right choice is not for me to say, but ultimately I feel like having at least one piece of brutally challenging content in the game would be nice. While I personally don't have a problem with one piece of content not being left as accessible to all (for example, I don't care for PVP, and I accept that I never will get the top tier rewards from that as a result), the majority don't feel that way. Destiny 2 just isn't that sort of game, and likely never will be.
I'm not going to say "the game is too easy", as ultimately that's subjective and depends on how much time you invest into the game. I don't want to "gatekeep" people from activities either. I just want the option to have something challenging in the game. So while my personal desire is to be challenged, I understand I'm the minority in that desire.
So as a tl;dr, for my opinion on whether I think Destiny 2 has become too easy, particularly in GM Nightfalls... for the people seeking the challenge, it definitely has. For the majority, the difficulty is probably in a good place.
