James Madison: A Life Reconsidered with the author Lynne Cheney and former Vice President Dick Cheney at UW
Author Lynne Cheney and her husband, former Vice President Dick Cheney, appeared at University of Wyoming on February 17, 2015, to discuss her book entitled James Madison: A Life Reconsidered . The book, released earlier this year, is described by Publishers Weekly as “a meticulously researched, richly detailed look at the life and times of Madison,” the intellectual power behind the Constitution and its ratification.
Former second lady of the United States and bestselling author, Lynne Cheney, was joined by former Vice President Dick Cheney, to share her view of James Madison the 4th president of the United States and the intellectual power behind the Constitution and its ratification. The result is a fresh, lively, and compelling narrative that takes the reader through the history-altering events that Madison did so much to shape. Cheney details Madison's key role in creating the Constitution and establishing the new Republic. As the leader of the First Congress and President Washington’s most influential advisor, he displayed a political savvy unmatched since when he went on to secure the passage of the Bill of Rights. In 1812, he became the first president to lead the nation in war under the Constitution, and he was not only as steady a commander-in-chief as the nation has ever known, he was a friend of liberty, refusing to silence those opposed to war, although many pressed him to do so. In her new book, Cheney explores his mind, his deeds, and his character to reveal the brilliance and determination that enabled this seemingly modest man to change the world.
A senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, Lynne Cheney has been studying James Madison since 1987, when she was a member of the Commission on the Bicentennial of the Constitution, and she has spent the last five years immersed in archival materials and uncovering new aspects of Madison’s story. She holds a Ph.D. with a specialization in 19th-Century British literature from the University of Wisconsin and is the author or co-author of twelve books, including six bestsellers about American history for children and their families. Mrs. Cheney lives in Wilson, Wyoming, with her husband, former Vice President Richard B. Cheney.
