The Cavs entered their first round series as favorites, with almost all sportsbooks, analysts, and predictive models taking them to advance to round two. Yet after just five games, their season is over, and the Knicks advance to the conference semis. A lot of that has to fall on the shoulders of their star and leader, Donovan Mitchell. He’s a great player, and has a real argument to be first team all-nba this season. But he did not play well this series, and the Cavs need him to be an elite scorer to win, because they don’t have a lot of depth when it comes to offense. After a legendary back-and-forth with Jamal Murray in the Bubble, where both players had multiple 50 point games, Mitchell earned a reputation as an elite playoff player. But at least of the past two seasons, that just hasn’t held true. He’s been sent home by Jalen Brunson in back to back years, and Mitchell’s shooting inefficiency sank his team in both series. He’s shown the ability to light it up in the playoffs before, but he let his team down in this series.
