This hymn, by Fanny J Crosby, is not sung any more, perhaps because its artless poetry grates on the modern ear, or because we have grown tired of the imagery ofJesus standing at the heart's door and knocking. But the truth of Revelation 3.20 remains unchanged: "Behold, I stand at the door and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me." And anyway, human wisdom was never designed to understand the things of God, which come only by revelation. What I can say is that many times, when sitting down to play this hymn, I have known a touch of the Spirit, and felt transported into the presence of Jesus, there to stay for a while.
The idea of Jesus sharing a meal with us is down to earth and has practical implications. The meal table is a great leveller, and the centre of family life. Hospitality, as practised in the Middle East, means I invite you into my life, and for a time lay everything else aside, to focus on you and listen to you. For Matthew the tax collector, discipleship began with throwing a lunch for Jesus (Mark 2.14-15); and the same was true of Zaccheus. Amazingly, Christ condescends to our ordinariness, in order that we may share in his holiness. Isn't the kitchen the hub of any household? And isn't the principal sacrament a fellowship meal?
