The Schemelli-song Ich halte treulich still – recorded here for All of Bach with Daniel Johannsen and Matthias Havinga - is a beautiful reflection of Baroque theology, in which resignation in the face of afflictions was an important theme and motto for life. Bach likely valued the almost Buddhist advice of poet J.H. Till, or he would not have chosen the poem for musical setting and publication in a hymnal. And we have reason to believe that the lovely F major melody, with its ‘undaunted’ walking bass line, is Bach’s own invention.
