This is my fresh cover of Gojira – L’enfant Sauvage. Gojira’s music is all about rhythm, but this song especially so. The verses are a great exercise both for playing paradiddles evenly and for controlling dynamics. The whole 16th-note flow needs to be quantized, perfectly tight, with ghost notes all equally soft (if you’re aiming for the original sound).

Another key point is the snare accent on the offbeat in the choruses — it has to line up perfectly with the kick. And then there’s the ending, where a rather chaotic (in my case, semi-improvised) cymbal part still needs to lock into the grid of the fast double kick. If these elements drift, the song loses its groove.

Yes, the tasks here are pretty robotic, and practicing them can be long and tedious, but I actually enjoy it. It’s still far from perfect, as usual, but I treat many metal drum parts more like exercises anyway. A few months or years from now, this song will probably sound completely different when I play it again.
