Galileo's support for the heliocentric model of the universe, which challenged the Church's geocentric view, sparked a heated debate and led to a confrontation with the religious authorities.

Galileo's observations through his telescope provided compelling evidence for the heliocentric model proposed by Copernicus, indicating that the Earth and other planets revolved around the Sun. These findings directly contradicted the Church's interpretation of Scripture, which placed Earth at the center of the universe.

In 1616, the Church issued a warning to Galileo, prohibiting him from teaching or defending the heliocentric model. However, Galileo continued to advocate for his ideas, publishing works like "Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems" in 1632, which presented arguments for heliocentrism.

This led to Galileo being summoned by the Roman Inquisition in 1633 and put on trial for heresy. Despite his defense and insistence that his views were supported by empirical evidence, Galileo was found guilty. He was sentenced to house arrest, where he remained until his death in 1642.
