Despite growing needs to increase the representation of women police in the border management sector, bringing them into the field remains challenging. Women police are currently underrepresented within law enforcement and especially at the borders due to the adverse working conditions and male-oriented environment.
However, integrating gender dimensions into border management has a significant impact on the ability of border officers to respond to the different needs and vulnerabilities of travelers who cross the borders every day. At borders, women officers are skilled at addressing violence and crimes against women, and they can improve relations between police and the community through interpersonal communication skills.
Through the Capacity Building in Migration and Border Management in Guinea project funded by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), IOM Guinea supports the border management authorities to integrate gender dimensions into practices. Through its gender-focused capacity-building activities designed for the border authorities, IOM enhances the capacity of border agents to recognize and respond appropriately to gender issues such as human trafficking and protection of vulnerable groups.
