The concept of extremism is usually associated with violent radicalism, terrorism, or incitement to violence, but in the russian context this notion has been redefined. In practice, we see that in the Russian-occupied territories the concept of extremism is used not to combat violence, but to enforce loyalty. It is about obedience. It is also about suppressing and erasing Ukrainian identity. 

This is how this week’s guest of “Drošinātājs”, Mariia Krasnenko - an expert at the Ukrainian Civic Education Center “Almenda” - describes the situation in Russia’s occupied Ukrainian territories in her conversation with Dīvs Reiznieks.
