This video is an introduction to the Russian pianist, composer, and music theorist Sergei Taneev's (1856-1915 [Taneyev; Taneiev]) theory of vertical shifting counterpoint. This theory is premised in Taneev's unique mathematical approach, and is therefore very general. It includes many traditional topics (such as invertible, or double counterpoint, and triple counterpoint) as well as types of counterpoint that were completely unexplored at the time of the publication of his book in 1909. Some of the key ideas are illustrated with analyses of the music of J.S. Bach.
