A man recounting how he saw the very first airplane flight ever. The year? 1903. The eyewitness? Frank Wood.

Back then, the Wright brothers had already been tinkering with what they called "full-sized gliders." Sounds cool, but none of them had managed powered flight, yet.

Frank Wood, born sometime in the 1870s, enrolled in Pennsylvania Military College in the late 1890s. But college life was cut short when he was called to serve in the Spanish-American War. He earned the rank of First Lieutenant because apparently, being average just wasn’t in his playbook.

After the war, Frank switched gears, literally, and opened a car garage. That decision turned out to be life-changing. Why? Because he met Barney Oldfield, one of the most famous race car drivers of that era.

Oldfield’s big moment came when he became the first man to drive a car one mile in a single minute, hitting 60 miles per hour. Yep, back then that was fast enough to make people’s top hats fly off.

Here’s a photo from 1902: Oldfield is in his race car, and standing next to him is a young, unknown gearhead, Henry Ford. Ford hadn’t yet built the Model T, but he was already neck-deep in race car parts and oil stains.

In the late fall of 1903, Frank and Barney headed to a farm near a small town called Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. One of them had caught wind of some wild experiments happening there, two brothers and their flying machine.

And lucky for them, they showed up on the right day. On a cold December morning, they witnessed something no human had seen before, the first successful powered flight.
