In this episode, I take you on a raw, unfiltered journey through the bustling streets of Osaka and the quiet corners of Kyoto. Two cities pulsing with culture, flavor, and surprises. We're not just here to eat and admire temples. We’re here for JDM watches like Seiko, Citizen, vintage gems, and secondhand finds you won’t see anywhere else.
But be warned, this is not your typical Osaka or Kyoto travel guide. This is about the hunt. The thrill of finding that one vintage JDM piece buried in a pawnshop, or lost among shelves in a BookOff Super Bazaar that smells like old plastic and quiet desperation. Sometimes, it includes the conversations you have without speaking. Just nods, gestures, and a shared respect between you and a Japanese shopkeeper who knows exactly what you’re looking for.
Osaka hits you in the face the second you arrive. Namba’s alive and twitching with color, food stalls coughing up steam, Don Quijote’s flashing madness burning your ears with the don don donki music. But beneath the noise are gems that even I myself is not expecting at all.
And then there’s Kyoto. Everyone talks about the temples, the geisha district, the bamboo groves. But I was here for something else and my intention is precise like a second hand in your watch. A city that wears time like a well-worn kimono. Under the tourist gloss are secondhand stores where I will be pushing my luck and see where it will go. Watches that have outlived trends, tasted decades, and now sits quietly waiting for someone who gets it. But do not be fooled because it is not always sunshine and rainbows here. Sometimes we hit, sometimes we miss.
If you're looking for the best places to buy watches in Osaka or Kyoto, if you’re into secondhand shopping in Japan, if you just want to feel like you’re wandering the backstreets with a pocketful of yen and no particular plan, then you are about to consume the correct content. And yeah, I’ll show you how to get to these places too. Train by train. Stop by stop. No nonsense.
I'll be honest with you, I might not help you completely as a tourist guide for your Kansai trip. But I will show you the other side of Osaka and Kyoto. The side that doesn’t care if you’re a tourist or a collector. It’s just waiting for you to show up and pay attention.
Thrifting at BookOff Super Bazaar Japan Seiko Watches, Citizen and Shoes has become a strategic way of shopping while visiting Japan!
It is a massive secondhand store and they are scattered across the entire country. Since we are in Osaka during the time of visit. We are checking the one in Amagasaki Nishikoya.
Why are we pushing these kinds of secondhand store?
1. Japanese people takes pride in taking care of their items and secondhand shopping is an immaculate way of touching their culture in the flesh.
2. Prices are sometimes too good to be true but they are real! How can you say no in finding a limited edition Seiko watch under 300USD or an Omega watch at 88,000 yen?
3. A spontaneous way of shopping in the dark because you will never know what to expect inside this huge secondhand store called BookOff Super Bazaar! From watches, rings, shoes, clothes, pokemon cards and anything in between. Most likely, they have it!
We have visited so many BookOff Super Bazaar in Japan and will Osaka be a contender for being the best thrift store in Japan? Only way to find out would be watching this Thrifting at BookOff Super Bazaar Japan Seiko Watches, Citizen and Shoes episode until the end!
