As Guitarists and other musicians that use Effect Pedals, we probably get a little obsessed about the finer details of pedalling. It can be a complicated world, and not every pedal is perfect. Which is a good thing, music is not meant to be perfect, so neither should the gear we use to make it!

Today, in what we call a “gentle ribbing” we talk about the 5 worst trends plaguing effects pedals, and effects pedal culture. This video is meant to be a light take, theres no hate here. We’re just having some fun. Don’t let any of these trends keep you from buying the pedal your after, it's not a big deal.

1. Mini pedals! How small is small enough? I understand the desire for a pedal to fit on your pedalboard, and leave room for more but I have the tendency to accidentally stomp on multiple pedals at once with my big clod hoppers. And sometimes these mini pedals need to concede some quality by using potentiometers that are more prone to breaking.

2. Trimpots and Dipswitches! The bane of my existence! I have a tendency to get a little annoyed when there are integral functions of a pedal buried on the inside of the unit - which means I have to take off my pedalboard, unscrew the back plate, and locate that pesky screwdriver. Annoying!

3. Less Talking more riffing. Sometimes we obsess too much about things, let’s relax and play our guitars.

4. Unlabelled functions. To this day I still don’t know what the secondary functions of my Strymon El Capistan does, I love that pedal so much. It’s a big frustrating to have to look up the manual to remember what/how to work a pedal. And some pedals forgoe naming their knobs at all, or use silly names that aren’t conventional - like my Digitech Grunge pedal that has a BUTT knob.

5. Being Boring! Common guys! Let’s get more creative, there are enough pedal clones out there. Pedal culture is evolving and we have some pretty exciting things coming out that are inspiring new ways to approach our instruments. It’s awesome.

As always. Thanks for watching!
