Composer’s Notes
In an orchestral setting, the work of a violist is most often the work of a supporting role. Most of us enjoy this; being able to add colour and texture to the melodic lines as part of the ‘heart’ of the the orchestra. There are moments however, where a melody is so beautiful or so stirring that one wishes the violists could play it too.
This was the inspiration for this work; a showpiece that takes the favourite would-be-solo moments of this (E.H.) violists orchestral career and makes them a moment for the viola to shine. Who said the violist can’t play virtuosic music, anyway?
The main influences of this work include Bach’s Cello Suite no. 6, the Mendelssohn, Sibelius, and Beethoven Violin Concertos and the Shostakovich Cello Concerto among others.
