When to Use Modes - Modal Chord Relationships

This lesson should hopefully answer the question "when do I use modes?" or "when should I use a particular mode?".

By training your ear to hear certain chord relationships, you'll connect the chord sequence to its related mode (if there is one). I show you what makes a given chord sequence suitable for playing a mode and how to identify the correct mode to play.

The 2nd half of the video gives you some ear training exercises based around the most common modal chord relationships. By internalizing these movements, the intervals between the chords regardless of what key you're in, you'll be in a much better position for improvising and writing your own solos.

Remember though, don't just write a song FOR modes. If the song happens to be written (whether purposefully or not) around a mode, and many chord progressions are purely modal, then you can make the most of them with this knowledge.
