In this webinar, our expert panel of researchers share their latest research, experiences, and insights on using eye tracking to examine visual attention in traffic safety research, both in simulators and real-world studies.

The talks:
1. The use of eye tracking for researching drivers' visual perception
Speaker: Asst. Prof. Dario Babić, Ph.D.
Understanding drivers' visual perception is crucial for enhancing road traffic safety. The research team at the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences, University of Zagreb, actively uses eye-tracking glasses to conduct studies related to drivers' visual scanning of main road elements and surrounding, as well as other road users under various conditions. As part of the webinar, the fundamental methodological approach and the results of studies conducted at the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences will be presented.

2. Pilot visual acquisition performance during flight
Speaker: Dylan Amerson
Pilots are required under Part 91 of the Federal Aviation Regulation to see and avoid other traffic. By establishing and evaluating this performance baseline, this capability can be translated to Detect and Avoid for uncrewed aircraft systems. Pilot visual acquisition performance is measured against a variety of other aircraft over the course of a flight where they encounter an undisclosed number of aircraft.

3. Algorithms to cluster spatial-temporal visual scanning networks in a virtual reality (VR) airport tower simulator
Speaker: Assoc. Prof. Ziho Kang
One of the challenging research topics in the eye tracking research community is the development of algorithms for clustering complex spatial-temporal visual scanning networks to uncover common human behaviors. During this seminar, Dr. Kang will introduce the concept of spatial-temporal visual scanning networks, explain why it poses challenges, and discuss a couple of viable algorithms that might address these challenges. The application context for this research is in the field of air traffic control using a high-fidelity virtual reality (VR) airport tower simulator.
