Dr Maran discusses how back pain happens when a person is obese in this video. He says that the spine is made of vertebral bones that are placed as columns one above the other in an “S” shape. He goes on to say that the structure of the spine is maintained by the paraspinal muscles, ligaments and other structures. In obese people, the wear and tear can happen anywhere in the body and the spinal structure is no exception. As a result of prolonged wear and tear, the alignment can change, or bones rub each other and can cause pain. Conditions like slipped disc are common in obese or overweight people. Another area of impact is the pelvic bones that tilts when bending and when there is wear and tear here there can be lower back pain. When there is a tummy, the heavy weight of the tummy pulls the lumbar spine. To keep it in balance, the paraspinal muscles and ligaments overwork only to get wear and tear.
