Cleaning The World’s Largest Free-spanning Dome - Singapore's National Stadium

Singapore’s National Stadium is an architectural marvel. It’s the world’s largest free-span dome, held up without any interior pillars. It’s so huge, in fact, that the Sydney Opera House can fit comfortably inside.

Since its opening in 2014, the 55,000-seat stadium - centrepiece of the Singapore Sports Hub - has hosted many major sporting events and performances. For the first time, it’s undergoing a thorough deep-cleaning.

To reach the beams and trusses that go up to 80 metres into the air, industrial climbers are called in. These rope access specialists are trained to do cleaning and maintenance work while being suspended in the air - up to 8 to 10 hours a day.

It takes the team almost a year to clean the interior of the dome, and another few months to clean the external dome structure which has a surface area of about 70,000 square metres - roughly the size of 10 football pitches.

CNA Insider takes a peek at how a small group of rope access experts pulls off the massive task of cleaning the world’s largest free-spanning dome.
