Jessa Rae Growing Thunder is a third-generation beadwork and quillwork artist. Some of her work is shown in this video excerpt of her talk at CSUC on April 7. She has a Ph.D. in Native American Studies and is an oral historian. She describes learning her artistry from her mother and grandmother, Fort Peck Assiniboine (Nakoda)/Sioux (Dakota). They’re dreamers who may dream their artwork designs, such as one of the trickster that the artist didn’t recognize until completion of the design. She is wearing an elk teeth necklace given to her by her Navajo husband and a ribbon skirt, a tradition started when ribbons were in goods given to the reservation tribes.
She told the story of how a chief prayed for four days and was answered by a buffalo chief. He gave his life to help the people with the condition that they not waste any part of the buffalo. Horses were given as a gift to the people after the chief sent brave warriors to find out what was beyond the horizon and they came to a green valley and a strange man who gave them a horse. Horses got increased speed from trickster throwing antelope horns at them.
