Twenty-four years ago today, NASCAR lost one of its greatest legends—Dale Earnhardt. On February 18, 2001, during the final lap of the Daytona 500, Earnhardt’s life was tragically cut short in a fatal crash, marking one of the darkest moments in the sport’s history.

That year’s Daytona 500 was already significant, as it marked Fox Sports’ debut NASCAR broadcast, drawing over 17 million viewers. Many had no idea they were about to witness an event that would forever alter the sport.

Just 27 laps before the final lap, Tony Stewart was involved in a horrific crash. Watching the chaos unfold, Earnhardt made a chilling remark over his radio to team owner Richard Childress:
"Richard, if they don’t do something to these cars, it’s gonna end up killing somebody."
