04 Hagalaz (Hailstorm)

Finally, and to the misfortune of the people, the storm sweeps everything away. The water floods the crops, rendering them useless, and the livestock has either fled or drowned. A young woman desperately tries to call them using her Kulning (The Calls of the Shepherd), a native Scandinavian musical form often used to summon livestock (cows, goats, etc.) from the high mountains where they have been grazing during the day. It may also be used to scare away predators (wolves, bears, etc.), although that is not its primary purpose. Perhaps they can do something before Yule arrives (the holiday associated with the Wild Hunt and the god Odin, celebrated every winter solstice). They cling to any ray of hope.

The hammer howls in rage on the horizon
The ravens herald the storm
The clouds are arrow shaped point to the harvest
Waiting for the order to fire

When dawn breaks all is lost, the field is barren
And all our future is gone
In the hands of the gods of Frey and Freya
Deliver us from this evil
Look the sky, it's quite clear
The lost catle will soon appear
Hold on, Yule is very near
Resist! Now there's no fear
The Hagalaz is the coldest of grain
It is whirled from tha vault of hights
and it is whipped by the gusts of the wind
Is spit out by the snakes
