On the 28th May 2021, RAF Coningsby revealed the new display shakedown livery, the jet which become known as "Blackjack". The maiden flight was a historic one for more reasons than one, not only was it the 2021 Typhoon display pilot's 1000 hour of flying but our Squadron Leader flew for the first time in this very flight! Flight Lieutenant James Sainty flew Ted for 25 minutes on the flight of his life, making Sainty, the godfather of our channel.
Blackjack was given to Typhoon ZJ914 and with its distinctive Union Flag livery has taken to skies, performing at airshows around Britain and parts of Europe. Blackjack was then flown by display pilot 'Paddy' in 2022 and our 2023 household name legend Typhoon display pilot 'Brighty', who flew Ted several times in 2023.
Blackjack can by flown by any of the pilots at RAF Coningsby (or Lossie if it goes there), it is flown like a regular Typhoon. ANARCHY1 is a callsign for a Typhoon display pilot and the display pilot can fly any of the Typhoons, not just Blackjack. When you hear ANARCHY1 callsign, this means the display pilot is off for a display. This is why you will hear callsign ANARCHY1 in a regular looking Typhoon jet. The Typhoon display pilot has another callsign 'RIOT', but this is used for transiting.
ZJ914
Before it became 'Blackjack', ZJ914 has been wearing other squadron markings too and before it had the Union flag livery, was plain black with a the green bat markings of 9 sqn. ZJ914 has been in the usual grey colour scheme with markings of 41 TES and 17 Squadron.
29 SQUADRON
During World War One, 26 of the pilots had achieved 'Ace' Status. Aircraft flown have included the Mosquito, Phantom and Tornado F3. 29 Squadron train RAF combat air pilots on the Typhoon, ready for front-line operations. In 1915, 29 Squadron formed at Gosport and travelled to France as a fighter squadron. Then in 1940 the Squadron began service as a defensive night fighter squadron. Three years later, they began offensive night intruder operations defending RAF heavy bombers. In 1987, the Squadron ecame the first operational squadron to be equipped with the Tornado F3 and in 2003 they were the second RAF squadron to receive the Typhoon.
Since the late 1920s, the squadron marking has been three (red) Xs (XXX). The markings should really be XXIX to resemble 29 in roman numerals, but there is a belief among current squadron personnel that this originated as a "misspelling" of the Roman numeral. Although various versions of the tradition are put forward, the most common explanation is that a mis-understood instruction to ground crew to paint "2 X's in front of the roundel and IX behind it" meaning "X,X,(roundel), and 'IX'. Instead, it was misunderstood to put 'one' X after the roundel. It has stayed ever since.
Today, 29 Squadron, based at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire, train RAF combat air pilots on the Typhoon, ready for front-line operations. This is known as an OCU 'Operation Conversion Unit'. From Grob, to Texan, to Hawk T2, once fast jet training is successfully complete, if a pilot is tuned to the Eurofighter Typhoon, they will go to RAF Coningsby and fly with 29 OCU. Just for info, if the pilot is tuned to the F-35B, then they will go to RAF Marham and fly with 207 OCU.
