An in-depth description of the history of California, from geological, botanical and social perspectives, focusing specifically on the San Joaquin Valley and the Lewis Hill Preserve.

The Lewis Hill Preserve is a 110 acre property owned by Sequoia Riverlands Trust, a regional land trust based in Tulare County, CA. One of 7 nature preserves owned by Sequoia Riverlands Trust, Lewis Hill lies just outside of Porterville, CA, and is a special gem made of unique minerals, a diverse history, and is the home of two rare and endangered plants - the Striped Adobe Lily and the San Joaquin Adobe Sunburst. Sequoia Riverlands Trust opens the preserve to the public for only one day a year, to allow for exploring and viewing of these rare flowers. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this annual event had to go virtual.

This talk is given by Fletcher Linton, a long-time supporter of SRT and expert on Lewis Hill. He has been leading the annual Lewis Hill event for 18 years, and graciously agreed to lead a virtual event for students involved in SRT's EARTH Academy. The EARTH Academy program is a 10-month internship opportunity for high school students around Tulare County. By offering hands-on, professional development opportunities that align with NGSS standards, EARTH Academy gives students exposure to potential careers in environmental fields. This year, EARTH Academy is funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which has supported SRT twice over to allow such great programs to continue.
