The Federal Reserve reduced its key interest rate by a quarter-point on Wednesday, marking its first cut since December. The move lowers the short-term rate to approximately 4.1%, down from 4.3%, as the central bank shifts its focus from inflation to the nation's labor market, which has shown signs of weakening.

The central bank also indicated plans for two additional rate cuts this year, though only one is expected in 2026, potentially disappointing Wall Street, which had anticipated five cuts through next year.

Fed Chair Jerome Powell and other officials had maintained the rate earlier this year while assessing the impact of tariffs, tighter immigration enforcement, and other policies from the Trump administration on inflation and the economy. However, with hiring nearly stalled and the unemployment rate increasing, the Fed's priorities have shifted.
