In early August, 2025, a property owner living near Weaverville, whom we will call Merle, was one of the local citizens who had grown accustomed to bears in the area. But, he had recently been visited by a family of feral cats. The poor little felines looked worse for wear, thin and desperate. They melted his heart with their little mews which sounded like they were begging for food. He couldn’t resist helping out, and retrieved a container to put food in for them. Watching the cats devour the food confirmed to him that helping them was a good thing and it became his enjoyment over the next few days.
Now Merle likely knew that the cats weren’t the only critter that would like a free meal. The bears in North Carolina were plentiful and were much larger than bears in any other habitats of the world. Along the coast they have access to agricultural areas which provide high protein food sources in addition to the abundant food sources mother nature provides. The larger bears claim prime territory pushing smaller bears into less desirable habitats located further inland. Over generations of this ecological mechanism the western portion of the state has become densely populated with hungry bears vying for calories and growing in desperation.
But, Merle wasn’t mulling any of that over as he dropped the last handful of cat food into the container one evening. He was tired and went to bed knowing he had helped some starving kittens.
The next morning his mind returned to the welfare of the forest felines. He knew they would be hungry and stepped out onto his porch to refill the food bowl before starting his day.
Now, Merle had seen plenty of bears around his place but hadn’t thought he would ever have a problem with them. They seemed content to forage for food in the forest. Once in a while one would raid neighborhood trash cans or bird feeders, but that was likely out of opportunistic feeding more than desperation.
As Merle searched for the catfood bowl, he turned toward the far end of his porch and encountered a terrified and aggressive black bear. Merle had accidently cornered the massive beast by stepping out the door and blocking the only escape route available. In a panicked attack the bear swatted Merle tearing gashes into his flesh, before shoving him down the stairs as it made its escape.
The attack happened so quickly that Merle was watching the back end of the bear disappear into the brush before he understood what had happened. The fall from his porch had left him with several bruises and scrapes, but the swat from the bear was painful and trickling blood.
In a confusing and quick altercation, the bear had likely experienced the most traumatic event of its life and had left Merle with a similar effect. Merle called 911 to request medical help for his injuries and to get police to the area to ensure his safety.
Within a matter of minutes an ambulance and police officers were on scene. They loaded up Merle and bandaged his wounds to slow the bleeding. After arriving at the hospital his wounds were cleaned and closed, and he was likely given antibiotics to ward off any infection that might set in. The medics categorized his wounds as not serious and released him to heal at home the same day.
As with most altercations with wild animals, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission investigated the attack. They noted that the bear was foraging for food at a human dwelling but was brought there by the scent of the cat food left out on the porch. When Merle stepped out of the door suddenly the bear likely felt cornered in the confined area of the porch and felt it necessary to defend itself. Caught in a surprise encounter the bear reacted with limited violence. It was not defending a cached animal carcass, and the presence of cubs was not noted to be a contributing factor in the attack. Due to the bear being surprised, authorities decided not to trap or relocate the bear. It would not face euthanization or other ramifications from the incident. The event was likely as scarring to the bear as its swat was to Merle.
Wildlife authorities urged the public to consider the alluring scents presented by human presence. Between trash left outside, pet food and bird seed and seldom cleaned bar b cue grills, hungry bears are constantly being tempted to encroach on human areas. In Buncombe County, more than 1000 bear nuisance calls were placed in 2024, with 2025 already surpassing those highs.
