Model History

The Bristol 406 was presented to the public at the 1958 London Motor Show at Earls Court. There were large amounts of changes made to the Bristol 406 compared its predecessor Bristol 405. The Bristol Car division found themselves somewhat at the natural end of development with their highly regarded 6 Cylinder 2L engine, having been in service from 1947 to keep up with competitors it was time for change. Mid to late 1950’s saw the development of their own 3L engine which was said to be running on a test bed but unfortunately never came to fruition. Instead Bristol distributor, racing driver and businessman Bob Gerard whom raced a Bristol engine Cooper at the time also saw the need for a larger capacity engine, he carried out experiment’s with a 2L Bristol with no cylinder liners fitted allowing him to fit larger pistons which showed the positives and seeing the potential. Bristol Cars ended up with the 2.2 110 Bristol Cylinder which features the maximum capacity and length of stoke the possible. The 110 Bristol engine had 105BHP identical to the previous 100 series engines but the all-important torque reached its maximum of 129 lb/ft at 3000 RPM whereas the 100 engine reached 123 lb/ft at 3750 RPM.

Other changes from the Bristol 405 to Bristol 406 include following:

Dunlop disc brakes were fitted on all 4 corners paired with servo assistance
Solex Carburettors with an enrichment pump to improve smoothness whilst cruising
The chassis was modified to allow for the Salisbury rear axle and discs

406/5236 History

Originally dispatched on the 28th November 1958 to a Mrs Veronica Stonborough of Wimborne Dorset. During Veronica’s ownership all factory service records and invoices have been preserved in perfect condition within the history present with the car. It seems in 1968 the car was sold to a P Emms of Bournemouth but little is known during the 1 year period of ownership.

In 1969 Mr Arthur Ernest Toon purchased the car and complied vast amount of history over the years much like Mrs Stonborough until he sold the car 35 years later in 2004. During the period from 2004 through to 2015 406/5236 had 3 owners until finding the current owner.

Over the past 10 or so years large amounts of considerable works have been carried out, to name a few:

Body restoration and re-spray
Engine rebuild
Gearbox rebuild including 1st gear being fitted with synchromesh
Overdrive refurbishment
Rear axle refurbishment
Rear suspension refurbishment
Retrim of front seats, headlining and door cards
Brake system overhaul (discs, pads, calipers and servo)
1,2,3 distributor, dynamator and hi-torque starter fitted
Brand new windscreens front and rear
Brand new Marschal headlamps fitted with LED bulbs.
Plus much more…

We feel this is a fantastic opportunity to obtain a true British classic with rarity a given and all of the restoration work completed this is truly not to be missed.
