The Thimphu Tshechu is a three-day religious event held in Bhutan. It is a time for Buddhists to cleanse themselves of bad karma and to remember what is important in life. Locals dress in their finest clothes and gather at the Thimphu Tashichoedzong to witness the sacred mask dance (Chham).
The Chham is performed as a tribute to Guru Rimpoche, a great Buddhist master who brought Buddhism to Bhutan. The monks perform a series of meticulously choreographed dances wearing grand silk robes and exquisitely crafted masks. It takes years to learn and master the art of mask dance, and the monks rehearse for months leading up to the event.

The three-day event includes a variety of Chham dances, such as the Dance of the Stag and the Hounds, the Dance of the Lords of the Cemetery, and the Dance of Eight Manifestations of Padmasambhava.
