Gregg Wallace Fired: MasterChef Investigation Uncovers 45 Substantiated Allegations

A bombshell independent investigation into the conduct of MasterChef presenter Gregg Wallace has concluded, revealing a staggering 45 substantiated allegations of inappropriate behavior, leading to his dismissal from the hugely popular BBC show. The comprehensive seven-month probe, commissioned by MasterChef's production company Banijay UK and conducted by leading law firm Lewis Silkin, delved into 83 allegations made by 41 complainants, all stemming from Wallace's nearly two-decade tenure on the program, spanning from 2005 to 2024. This detailed report paints a troubling picture of a workplace environment where numerous instances of misconduct went unaddressed for far too long.

The majority of the upheld allegations relate to inappropriate sexual language and humor. Specifically, the investigation found 12 claims of inappropriate jokes and innuendo, 16 instances of sexually explicit comments, and two allegations of sexualized comments made to or about individuals. Beyond these, the report also substantiated other forms of inappropriate language, three incidents of Wallace being in a state of undress, and one deeply concerning instance of "unwelcome physical contact." Furthermore, four complaints detailing culturally insensitive or racist comments were also upheld, adding another layer to the serious nature of the findings.

The investigation highlighted significant systemic failures within the production company and the BBC itself. Evidence showed that between 2005 and 2024, six complaints were formally raised with Banijay UK, and another six with the BBC, with four of these complaints being raised with both entities. Despite these formal warnings, the report indicates that more robust action could, and should, have been taken sooner. Formal actions were reportedly initiated by the production company in 2015 and the BBC in 2017, suggesting that concerns about Wallace's behavior were not new, yet the issues persisted. The report critically points out that in earlier years (2005-2011), complaints were often handled informally, without proper records or effective follow-up, and that the BBC lacked a centralized system for tracking such concerns, leading to repeated offenses being treated as first-time incidents.

Gregg Wallace, who stepped back from presenting duties in November 2024 when the allegations initially surfaced, was officially sacked by the BBC last week, prior to the public release of the report. In response to the findings, Wallace issued a statement expressing that he was "deeply sorry for any distress" his behavior caused, claiming he "never set out to harm or humiliate." He also acknowledged a "difference in perception" regarding the "unwanted touching" allegation. Crucially, Wallace also referenced a recent diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder, suggesting his neurodiversity might be relevant to how his communication and behavior were perceived, and lamenting that TV bosses had failed to "investigate my disability" or "protect me from what I now realise was a dangerous environment." However, disability charities have criticized his apparent attempt to link his alleged behavior with his diagnosis.

Both the BBC and Banijay UK have issued statements acknowledging the report's findings. The BBC unequivocally stated that Wallace's return to MasterChef was "untenable" and confirmed it has "no plans to work with him in future," emphasizing that his behavior "falls below the values of the BBC." Patrick Holland, chief executive of Banijay UK, admitted the report "makes for uncomfortable reading," highlighting "failures in legacy reporting and HR procedures," but expressed hope that it would lead to valuable insights for ensuring a safer and more supportive environment on their productions moving forward.

Adding to the complexity, the investigation also looked into 10 standalone allegations against other individuals, substantiating two of them. Notably, MasterChef co-presenter John Torode publicly confirmed that an allegation of him using racist language was upheld, though he stated he has "no recollection" of the incident and was "shocked and saddened" by the claim, reiterating that "any racial language is wholly unacceptable."
