Exploring the Rota do Romanico sites in Portugal. Last week, I travelled back in time alongside the Romanesque route (Rota do Romanico) in northern Portugal. It’s a cultural route that takes you on an astonishing journey back to the Middle Ages and the time when the first universal European style, the Romanesque, appeared. The route covers an area of 2000 square kilometres and consists of 58 sites, including monasteries, churches, castles, bridges, and other beautiful monuments. It's a part of the Cultural Route of the Council of Europe, the TRANSROMANICA. It’s fascinating to think about the first universal European art ideas that appeared more than 1,000 years ago and were shaped within Romanesque architecture. The TRANSROMANICA helps you explore that medieval part of the joined European heritage.
