Captions aren't just for deaf users.

Captions support a wide range of people:
• Viewers in noisy or quiet environments
• Multilingual users who prefer visual reinforcement
• Those with cognitive or learning disabilities who benefit from reading along
• Aging adults or anyone managing temporary hearing loss
• Users who simply learn or focus better with text

But captions only truly serve the Deaf and hard of hearing community when they meet the standards of effective communication— they must be accurate, complete, synchronized, and convey the full meaning of what’s being shown and said.

That means including features like speaker identification, descriptions of non-speech audio such as music or important sounds, and syncing with the pace and flow of the video.

Captions benefit many — but they must be created with this level of care to truly remove barriers.
