Another Klangteppich is here for you!
Today, I’d like to introduce you to the wonderful Wurlitzer Piano. Introduced in 1955 by the Rudolph Wurlitzer Company (whose founder by the way was born in Schöneck, Vogtland - only 25 km from my hometown), it built upon an invention of Benjamin Meissner, who used electrostatic pickups to amplify an ordinary acoustic piano in the 1930s. Wurlitzer used those pickups, but changed the piano strings for short metal plates, called reeds. This causes a very distinctive sound, made famous by Ray Charles, Pink Floyd and Supertramp, to name but a few.
This model I used here, is a Wurlitzer 200A from 1970 which I got from Saraswati Studio in Poland where we recorded our second Polis album and I recently had it restored to full technical beauty by the German Guru of electric Pianos, Jens Lübke, along with my Rhodes Piano which I will introduce next time.
Enjoy!
