Despite the suspension of Congress MLAs Charles Marngar and Gabriel Wahlang on Friday for alleged anti-party activities, the two, along with Dr. Celestine Lyngdoh, officially joined the National People's Party (NPP) on Monday at the party’s new office in Shillong.

Earlier, the three Congress legislators—Nongstoiñ MLA Gabriel Wahlang, Mawhati MLA Charles Marngar, and Umsning MLA Dr. Celestine Lyngdoh—met with Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker Thomas Sangma to complete the formalities for their merger with the NPP.

This shift leaves the Congress party with only one MLA and one MP in Meghalaya. Meanwhile, the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government, which previously had 28 MLAs, now increases its strength to 31.

The suspension of Marngar and Wahlang for six years over alleged anti-party activities raises questions about whether the Congress will pursue legal recourse.
