The Kumaon Regt is one of the highest decorated Regt of the Indian Army having the singular honour to receive the first Param Vir Chakra as well as the first President's Colours.
In 1813, Sir Henry Russell, then British Resident in the court of Nizam of Hyderabad, raised the Russell Brigade comprising two battalions. The force was renamed as the Hyderabad Contingent, and became part of the British Indian Army, subsequently, becoming the 19th Hyderabad Regt. Over time, the class composition changed to Kumaonis and Ahirs. On 27 October 1945, after the Second World War, the 19th Hyderabad Regt was renamed as 19th Kumaon Regt. Post-independence, it has been known as the Kumaon Regt . The Regt is enriched with the gallant history of its soldiers where it has won 02 Param Vir Chakras, 04 Ashok Chakras, 02 Padma Bhushan, 14 Param Vishist Seva Medal, 13 Maha Vir Chakras, 10 Kirti Chakras, 82 Vir Chakras and 46 Shaurya Chakras.
The Kumaon contingent this time is represented by the young warriors with most of the soldiers in the contingent with less than one year service and are participating in the RDP even before joining their respective battalions.
