Alma Gracia, an elementary school teacher at Los Angeles Unified School District, is teaching her students about digital citizenship during their restorative justice circles, which aims to build positive behavior and strengthen communities. She talks to her students about how their actions have consequences, and that if you hurt someone online, it could stay there forever. Gracia’s students are learning about ISTE Digital Citizen Standard 2a: “Students are aware of the permanence of their actions in the digital world.” Gracia has her students practice good digital citizenship by writing their own rules for protecting their digital footprints. “When I started teaching, I never thought I would be teaching things like this. But we are teaching the leaders of the world. I’m glad I’m part of it because I want to be part of that change.”
