Interview excerpt from Sean Booth of Autechre, from around this time:
"Originally a lot of the tracks were made in real time and recorded with old Roland gear, drum machine and synths and we would play it live when we were writing the tracks. When we got asked to play live we thought, 'Fucking hell that's a bit of a gamble, but let's try and do that same process live as well and see what happens'. It's easier than we thought and we got cocky! We would set up and just play...I wouldn't say live like guitar music because it's not the same kind of thing, but it does have the same consideration and there is a certain amount of spontaneity. We could decide on the spot a sound that sounds a certain way or a song that is going in a certain direction then respond to that with a kick drum. We played off each other, it was natural for us to do that in the studio and also live. We had to do it like that - just off the cuff. Intuition is a massive chunk of your brain constantly doing stuff like catching a ball; if you think about it you fuck it up, and that's how we worked!"

Another interview excerpt, from Oct.2015:
'Each record that came after Chiastic Slide saw the duo's music become more and more intentionally disarrayed — the result of a move away from hardware and towards software, particularly Cycling '74's Max, a "visual programming language for media," that allows for the manipulation of audio and visuals, with an endless number of applications. Autechre use Max as a kind of framework or platform, designing bits of software within the software; these days, their music-writing process happens in two parts: writing software during the day, and creating music with it at night. At this point, Max is as integral to Autechre's music as Booth and Brown are; according to Booth, "with a lot of our [music writing process] being algorithmic, it's getting to the point where it's difficult to say what's composition and what's algorithmic, when you define the algorithms that tightly, and we enjoy that grey area." '

In a Q&A session with members of the web-group "we are the music makers", Sean also mentioned that, for him, the 2010 OVERSTEPS album was "about memory". "You mean nostalgia?" someone asked him to clarify. "No, just memory," he replied.

They have been designing and using their own music software for many years now, and use it live as well. They've explained that it works similar to how jazz players are able to interact with one another!
