This is the beginnings of Las Vegas. Join me as I tell you the story of how the now city of bright lights, glitz and glamor started out as a little watering hole in the desert.
I would say the biggest events that led to Las Vegas growing into a major city were 1. the arrival of the 32 Mormon missionaries in 1855 building the fort.They built irrigation and agriculture in the desert. Their fort served as a way station near water springs between Salt Lake City and Las Angeles.
2. Helen Stewart, who later occupied the land the LDS missionaries settled, sold 1,800 acres to railroads in 1902. This made Las Vegas a key stop.
3. The construction of the Hoover Dam (1931-1936) nearby. Las Vegas became the supply, housing and entertainment hub for the thousands of workers that came to build that modern marvel during the great depression. Which in turn lead tio a 4th big event. The legalization of gambling to entertain the workers and influx of people it brought to the area. The dam also generated huge amounts of Hydroelectric power which would go on to power all the bright lights of the Vegas casino's. The Hoover Dam was on a scal and size the likes of which the world had never seen. dwarfing and size even the great pyramids in Egypt. And it was the tallest Dam ever built also as well as most powerful hydroelectric plant.
