It was the start to a particularly eventful summer.

Another summer where harmful algal blooms, red tides, beach closings, and images of dead sea-life dominated the news and became part of our summer lexicon.

One recent summer in particular, saw a toxin from a harmful algal bloom form and eventually contaminate the drinking water source for the City of Toledo, Ohio. Eventually prompting a ‘do not drink’ order.

This poor water quality event was at least visible as it developed. You could see it continuing. Not all water quality issues are as obvious.

Most of these issues go unseen. Unnoticed until an event. A fish die off. A closed drinking water well. A ‘do not swim or fish’ sign posted. Or a death.

In fact, most issues are caused by invisible contaminants. Unseen until their effect is too late.

It is estimated that less than 20% of the world’s drainage basins exhibit near pristine water quality.
All freshwater requires a continued healthy functioning ecosystem.

These ecosystems across the world are in decline and need our help.
We’ve come a long way. We have a long way to go.
