STORYLINE:
Officials in the Chilean capital of Santiago declared a smog emergency on Friday, ordering nearly 200,000 vehicles off the streets and 590 factories idled in the city of 5.5 million people.
Air quality is often bad in Santiago but has worsened recently due to an unseasonable lack of wind and rain.
The capital experiences several smog emergencies each year during the fall and winter seasons, from April to September.
Friday's declaration forced 190,000 cars off the streets, about 20 percent of the city's total.
The restricted vehicles are determined according to the final number in their license plates.
Authorities also ordered 590 factories that run on oil instead of natural gas to stay closed for the day.
Santiago schools suspended physical-education classes and all sports activities, and elderly people were cautioned to try to remain indoors and avoid the city centre.
