What is Intent-based networking?

Intent-based networking (IBN) enables agile, resilient and business-centric networks. It is a paradigm shift that focuses on “what” the network is supposed to do versus “how” the network components are configured. It allows organizations to design, build, verify and operate networks based upon what is intended from a business perspective.

There's been a lot of attention around intent these days at Veriflow we've been talking intent for years. So, let's dive right in and answer “what is intent in the network?” For us in networking intent comes from business objectives or what the business requires to achieve desired outcomes. It is the “why” we do anything.

For example, intent starts as high-level declarative goals “what we need is a network that is available and protected” declares the CIO. The director of networking then declares “what we need to protect the network is to ensure the core data center is isolated from all that unknown guest Wi-Fi traffic.” These are the desired business driven outcomes or business intent.

In today's environments network operations looks at the desired outcome and asks “ok, how am I going to do this?” and gets to work prescribing different courses of action based on a variety of vendor specific requirements at the command line and setting config device by device. Then you must try to validate and test before you move on to your next set of infrastructure devices and repeat the process. All this tedious work is to meet one part of one business driven outcome.

This process occurs time and time again with each change order. Intent based networking systems brings network ops out of the “how am I going to do this?” and up into what we need” aligning daily operations with business intent and executive goals, freeing ops from those vendor specific restrictions and deployment quirks.

Intent based systems in their very nature are vendor agnostic normalizing daily activities and multivendor environments. With an intent based network the workflow for ops now goes straight to the declarative statement the intent of what needs to get done; without getting caught up in the tedious individual prescriptive tasks in the “how am I going to do this.” The endless cycle of provisioning and change is now manageable, saving time and resources while drastically reducing any chance for error.
