Описание к видео Research2Practice Sports Injury Webinar

Part 1 is presented by Christina Yannetsos, MD, Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Part 2 is presented by Dawn Comstock, PhD, Professor of Epidemiology at the Colorado School of Public Health.

Part 1, Dr. Yannetsos's Talk Description: The seminar will focus on the application of concussion prevention, and identification strategies in the US Olympic sport of judo as well as highlight changes adapted by USA Judo to increase awareness of concussion for the health of athletes.

Part 2, Dr. Comstock's Talk Description: Boys’ and Girls’ High School Lacrosse have very different rules. Boys’ Lacrosse is a full contact sport, allows body and stick checking, and requires players wear several pieces of protective equipment including a hard shell helmet with full face mask. Girls’ Lacrosse does not allow body checking, has a “sphere rule” which is supposed to prevent stick checking to the head, and prohibits players from wearing any protective equipment except required mouthguard and eyeware and an allowed flexible helmet. Despite these differences, concussion rates are relatively similar among boys and girls lacrosse players. However, mechanism of concussion varies with athlete-athlete contact accounting for most concussions in boys while contact with the stick or ball accounts for most concussions in girls. While researchers have, for over a decade, debated whether or not girls should also be allowed to wear the same hard shell helmet with full face mask required for boys, the sport’s governing bodies have firmly retained their gendered helmet rules. In this seminar Dr. Comstock will present the epidemiologic data demonstrating the resultant concussion risk to girls lacrosse players and lead a discussion of the cultural drivers at play in the decision to continue to deny girls lacrosse players equal access to protective equipment.
