Wisdom would dictate that the new member would sit under the ministry to somewhat understand the mission and direction of the church. But there must come a time when members become contributors to the church community by serving. Becoming a part of a specific ministry within your local church is paramount for growth and development personally and for the church as a whole.
You don't want to be a sponge and soak up the resources of the church and never contribute. Ideally, your local church should encourage you to get involved in a specific ministry and become a contributor to your local church community.
